Hypogeums Lagrasta
It’s the most remarkable set of apogees in Canosa and in the whole region. It dates back to the IV-I century BC and is divided into three hypogeums. Dug out in the tufa, the biggest and the most famous one (the Lagrasta I) consists of nine chambers branching off from the same «dromos» (access corridor) forming a Latin-cross structure and is decorated by Ionic semi-columns.
From an architectonic point of view, these hypogeums are very similar to the contemporary funeral graves, belonging to the Greek and Macedonian style. Besides, they stand for the «abodes» of the dead belonging to the wealthy aristocratic-class natives called «princes dauni».
